This project was an exploration to see how old garments can be turned new. As someone who never upcycles items, this was a huge change from my normal design process. My aesthetic is very grand, and I like a certain professionalism that lacks when some thrift and change clothing items. It got even worse in seminar, because my original plan had to completely change to fit the seminar research. I found many inspiring sexist ads, and many beautiful portraits that were shot by Richard Avedon. They also used to have advertisements for things such as Wool fabrics, which heavily inspired my thrifting choice. All the men were practically told to wear suits, and all the females were showing off their small waists. There was one advert by Gris that inspired a large amount of design for this project.

My work heavily focuses on two opposing forces, for this project the contrast between wool and boning was the primary focus. Even though it's made of previously worn garments, it was important that every pattern piece was cut new, and every stitch and finish was new.

Radical sustainability isn’t a designer’s responsibility; it’s been a shift in consumer mindset. Today’s buyers are more informed and demanding than ever, seeking brands that align with their values. Minimalism plays a crucial role here—encouraging consumers to curate wardrobes with purpose, avoiding unnecessary purchases. As this movement grows, it challenges both brands and consumers to rethink the relationship between fashion and sustainability. By choosing thoughtful design, radical sustainability offers a vision of fashion that’s as kind to the planet as it is to the individual.
